On October 13, 1928, in Videre, near Copenhagen, the dowager empress Maria Feodorovna passed away. She died at the age of 80 in the home she once shared with her sister, Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom. Maria Feodorovna outlived four of her six children. After a service at the Russian Orthodox Church of Alexander Nevsky in Copenhagen, she was buried in the cathedral in Roskilde.

On September 28, 2006, according to her will, the empress's remains were reburied next to her husband, Emperor Alexander III, in the Peter and Paul Cathedral. This took place 140 years after her first arrival in Russia and nearly 78 years after her death.

Maria Feodorovna, born Maria Sophia Frederica Dagmar, was born on November 14, 1847, in Copenhagen, Denmark. She became the Russian empress by marrying Alexander III on October 28, 1866, and was the mother of Emperor Nicholas II.
