Many believe that the sculpture 'Lady with a Dog' on Volodarsky Street is dedicated to the heroine of Chekhov's work, but this is not the case. In fact, the woman with a small terrier represents a collective image symbolizing all the beautiful women of Penza.
The monument was installed in July 2008. According to the author's concept, a slender and attractive girl strolls through the quiet streets of Penza, sheltering from the sun under a small umbrella, while her faithful fluffy companion walks beside her. Additionally, 'Lady with a Dog' has a connection to the neighboring ninth house, but what it is remains a mystery. There are different versions.
This magnificent mansion was built in the 1880s by college registrar Hofmeister. However, since the official was often absent due to work, his wife Maria Augustovna took care of the house. Thanks to her, the building acquired unique features of Russian wooden architecture. In the early 20th century, the estate passed to Olga Kopylova, the wife of one of Penza's dentists, and she was the one who took care of its improvement. Thus, from generation to generation, women have watched over the mansion.
In honor of these guardians of the hearth, the monument was erected. Today, it has become one of the most popular attractions in Penza, where newlyweds often come to take photographs.
