In our days, the Skobeleva surname is not as well-known as it was during the era of the Russian Empire, yet studying the history of one's country remains important. Today, I will tell you about Zinaida Dmitrievna Skobeleva, the sister of a famous general, the first beauty of the imperial capital, and the Duchess of Leuchtenberg. Her fate is of great interest, and I will narrate everything in order.

Zinaida Dmitrievna was born on January 17, 1856. Her father, Dmitry Ivanovich, was a general, her mother, Olga Nikolaevna, managed Russian hospitals during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, and her brother, Mikhail Dmitrievich, was a renowned military leader of the second half of the 19th century, comparable in fame to Suvorov. Zinaida received an excellent education, lived in Paris for a long time, studied with the famous singer Polina Viardot, and visited the King of Spain with her mother.

Upon returning to Russia, Zinaida Dmitrievna, now a grown beauty, caught the attention of Evgeny Maximilianovich Romanovsky, the Duke of Leuchtenberg and grandson of Nicholas I, who was widowed by that time. Interestingly, his late wife Dolly was Zinaida's cousin. In 1878, they married, and the 22-year-old beauty became an excellent match for the duke. Possessing a beautiful voice, she could not perform on stage due to the morals of the time, but she successfully sang among close friends.

After marriage, Zinaida received the title of Baroness Bogarne and later became known as the Duchess of Leuchtenberg. She quickly found herself at the center of high society, and in 1880, she began an affair with Grand Duke Alexei Mikhailovich. Their brilliant connection went unnoticed by her husband, but Emperor Nicholas II condemned his uncle's infatuation. The Grand Duke did not listen and even resigned to avoid pressure. However, their relationship ended tragically: the young duchess suddenly fell ill and passed away on June 4, 1899, at the age of only 43.
