A few versts from Bozhonka lies the ancient village of Sheltemezh. Local historians believe that the name "shel do mezhi" indicates a stop of the Tatar-Mongol troops at a natural barrier. In 1887, a women's community was established here, which became the Ascension Kinovial Monastery in 1906.

The main shrine of the monastery was the miraculous icon of the Mother of God Shestokovskaya. According to legend, it was found on March 6, 1770, in Moscow by second lieutenant Nikolai Dmitrievich Skripitsyn. One day, a blessed maiden living in his house saw a radiant scroll in a chimney in her dream. Soon, a bundle of cloth fell out from there, which was unwrapped to reveal an image of the Mother of God with the infant. This icon became a family relic, and after the owner's death, it was transferred to the church of the village of Sheltemezh, the ancestral estate of the Skripitsyns. Hence, the second name of the icon, Sheltemezhskaya.

Through the prayers of the faithful, the icon performed miracles of healing. It was placed in the Ascension Cathedral, of which only fragments remain today, in the Sheltemezh Women's Monastery. The monastery also housed a school for children and a nursing home for the elderly. The abbess, along with the sisters and the spiritual father, would read the akathist before the icon adorned with a precious robe, and on March 6, the day of the icon's glorification, they would take it out of the temple for a procession to the neighboring village of Bozhonka. Many people from surrounding villages would gather for the celebration. The veneration of the Shestokovskaya icon gradually became a church-wide practice. The icon is executed in the baroque style of the late 18th century, with attributes of sovereignty emphasizing the status of the Mother of God as the Queen of Heaven and the God-Infant Christ as the King of Kings. This image symbolizes a mystical protection over Russia.
