Marc Chagall, a significant figure in 20th-century painting. He was often called a "storyteller" and the Andersen of painting. His paintings feature flying people and fish, violinists playing on rooftops, and lovers kissing somewhere near the moon. The artist loved to tell the story of his grandfather, who, in good weather, would climb onto the roof of the house, settle comfortably, and enjoy eating juicy carrots, washed down with compote. This symbolized freedom, solitude, and the feeling that the whole world was at your fingertips. Thus, the idea of flight emerged, and Chagall's characters easily defy gravity.

The famous painter was born in Vitebsk in July 1887. In the first hours of his life, he showed no signs of life, but a neighbor midwife managed to revive him. The family lived in a poor neighborhood: his father worked as a loader at a herring warehouse, and his mother sold fish. They had nine children: seven daughters and two sons. Marc was always drawn to drawing, and when he spoke of a trip to St. Petersburg, he was initially misunderstood, but they did not try to stop him. His father allocated money for the journey from their last savings and helped with the arrangement of a temporary pass, as there was a settlement area for Jews at that time. Young Chagall set off for the capital and dedicated his life to art.

At first, it was difficult, but he encountered people along the way who recognized his outstanding talent and helped him. Nikolai Roerich took him on as a student and provided a scholarship. Public figure and lawyer M. M. Vinaver paid for Marc's trip to Paris for professional growth. The Louvre, museums, and galleries of the city offered him more than the best art academy could.

Since 1923, Marc Chagall lived in exile, working in France and the USA, traveling. After a trip to Syria and Palestine, he was inspired to create the book "Biblical Tales." He was able to return to Russia briefly only in 1973.

The artist passed away in March 1985, just two years short of his 100th birthday. He was buried in the cemetery in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
