The building that currently houses the historical and local lore museum was constructed in the mid-19th century by merchant Smirnov. He lived in one wing with his family, while his trading hall was located in the other. There is a story that during the Soviet years, the merchant was arrested, but he managed to escape with the help of guards and moved to Siberia. After his death, around the 1970s, Smirnov's son visited Sergievsk to honor his native land and home. In the early 1920s, the former home of merchant Smirnov became a people's house, where meetings and public events were held.

After the state bank moved to a new building, a debate flared up in the district newspaper 'Selskaia Tribuna' under the slogan 'The Museum Must Exist!'. Some suggested using the old building as a prayer house, others as a district library, but most supported the idea of creating a local lore museum. The museum's opening was timed to the 290th anniversary of Sergievsk and took place on June 19, 1993.

Today, the Sergievsky Historical and Local Lore Museum is not only a place for storing exhibits and holding exhibitions but also a center for patriotic education. Each tour and event is aimed at instilling love for the native land, fostering a sense of beauty, love for the surrounding world, and pride for the people whose labor has created all this.
