The love story of Don Cossack Grigory Melekhov and Aksinya has long transcended the pages of books and become a theme for various creative directions. In Russia, many monuments have been erected to this Cossack Romeo and Juliet, but the most famous one is located in the village of Veshenskaya, which serves as a prototype for the Tatarsky farmstead. Today we will tell you about this monument.

The idea of creating a monument to Aksinya and Grigory arose during Sholokhov's lifetime. Today we will not discuss the authorship of "And Quiet Flows the Don," but simply enjoy the story of the existence of this magnificent monument, the project of which was developed in 1957 by sculptor Mozaev. Only after 26 years of waiting and hard work was the sculpture cast. Initially, it was planned for Melekhov to be depicted on an Arabian horse, but this mistake was corrected, and in the final version, Grigory appeared on a Don horse. In bronze, the scene comes to life, which took place at the beginning of the love journey of the main characters of "And Quiet Flows the Don," when Grigory met Aksinya with a yoke. Looking at the monument, one involuntarily recalls their dialogue.

After the work was completed, the 12-ton monument was installed in 1983 in Rostov-on-Don opposite the river station, but in 1995 it was moved to the village of Veshenskaya. Since then, the sculptural composition has been located on the high bank of the Don, where the events of the novel "And Quiet Flows the Don" took place. It is worth noting the authenticity of the image of the villagers of that time.
