Pokrovsky Avraamiev-Gorodetsky Monastery: Church of St. Nicholas in Nozhkino

Фото 1
The quadrangular single-domed gate church of St. Nicholas, with chapels dedicated to St. Dimitri of Prilutsk and St. Paraskeva the Great Martyr, was built in the Avraamiev-Gorodetsky Monastery during a period of active stone construction. The approximate date of its erection was determined thanks to an inscription on a 17th-century Gospel, which was kept in the rich monastery treasury before the revolution. The inscription stated: "In the year 7159, on September 20, the donor Tarch, son of Nikifor, the scribe, placed this Gospel book on the altar in the house of the Most Holy Theotokos of the Protection and the miracle worker Avraamiy, in the Gorodetsky Monastery, and placed it on the altar of St. Nicholas the Miracle Worker in the new stone church at the Holy Gates, at the cellarer Avraamiy Pimenov." Beneath the church on the lower floor were cells that have survived to this day. Now pilgrims enter the monastery not through the Holy Gates, but through the gates in the bell tower. The St. Nicholas gate church was the first to be restored in the returned Church of the Avraamiev-Gorodetsky Monastery. Already on April 18, 1992, its dome was crowned with a cross, and on May 22, the day of the celebration of the transfer of the relics of St. Nicholas the Miracle Worker, services began in the church.
