One of the symbols of Azov is a memorial dedicated to the Cossack siege, established in July 1991 in honor of the heroism of the fortress defenders. The initiative to create the monument came from local residents who sought to revive Cossack traditions and immortalize the memory of their ancestors.

The memorial is designed in the form of an Orthodox cross with memorial inscriptions. Nearby are information stands that detail the events of 1640 and 1641, when the Cossacks steadfastly defended the fortress of Azov from attacks by the Ottoman Turks.

Against five thousand Cossacks, the Ottoman Empire deployed a massive army equipped with hundreds of siege cannons and mercenaries from various countries. Cossack women also participated in the defense of the fortress alongside their husbands.

After a prolonged siege, the Turks were forced to retreat, losing more than a third of their army. However, soon the Cossacks also left the fortress, as they had no strength left for further resistance. As they departed, they destroyed all defensive structures, and the Turks returning with reinforcements found only ruins. Later, the Cossacks returned and built a beautiful city here.
