If you walk from the Bogoyavlensky Monastery along Simanovsky Street and turn onto Pyatnitskaya Street, descending towards the Volga embankment, you can see the memorial stone of Kostroma at the intersection of Pyatnitskaya and Ostrovsky. This place is the center of the oldest part of the city. Here, on a hill that is now hidden, the first Slavic inhabitants settled in the 10th century. Later, there was a princely tower and a square for the veche.

Once, a full-flowing river, Sula, flowed along Pyatnitskaya Street, but after the dense forests were cut down, it dried up, leaving only a ravine that was filled in the 19th century.

In 1977, in honor of the city's 825th anniversary, a monument was erected at this site. Now, around the memorial stone, a Friendship Flowerbed has been created. Every year, representatives of all nationalities for whom Kostroma has become home plant flowers there.
