On August 22, 2015, a monument to Saint Righteous Lavrenty of Kaluga was unveiled near the Holy Trinity Cathedral. It is located next to the monument to Kuksha of Pechersk and was opened on the saint's feast day, coinciding with the 500th anniversary of his death.

The monument was created by sculptor Alexey Leonov, who also designed the monuments to Kuksha of Pechersk and Yuri Gagarin in Kaluga. The project was funded at the initiative of the Kaluga Diocese and the region's governor, Anatoly Artamonov.

The monument depicts Lavrenty of Kaluga with an axe, which he wielded during his heroic act in 1512. That year, the Crimean Tatars attacked Kaluga, and Prince Simeon, with a smaller army, went out to meet them. Lavrenty, while in the prince's house, exclaimed: "Give me my sharp axe. The dogs of Prince Simeon have surrounded us! Let me defend Prince Simeon from the dogs!" On the battlefield, when the Russians began to retreat, Lavrenty suddenly appeared with the axe and encouraged the warriors with the words "Do not be afraid!" This inspired the Russian army, and Prince Simeon managed to repel the enemy. Returning to the prince's hut, Lavrenty said: "We defended Prince Simeon from the dogs!"

Little is known about the life of Lavrenty of Kaluga. According to one version, he came from the noble family of Khitrovo. The saint often visited Prince Simeon's house and lived in a hut near the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The hut and the church were connected by an underground passage, which Lavrenty used to secretly come and pray. He passed away on August 10, 1515, and was buried near the church, where the Holy Lavrenty Monastery later arose.
