On September 9, 1828, a monument was unveiled in Kronstadt to 23-year-old midshipman Alexander Alexandrovich Domashenko of the ship "Azov." During a storm off the coast of Sicily, he jumped into the sea to save a drowning sailor, but both perished in the waves. Domashenko's comrades were deeply moved by his Christian act of bravery and, upon returning from the war, appealed to Emperor Nicholas I for permission to erect a monument. The Emperor agreed and personally attended the unveiling of the monument, which was created by sculptor Joseph Charlemagne with funds raised by the sailors.

The idea to create the monument belonged to the crew of the ship "Azov." The fundraising was led by the ship's captain, Rear Admiral Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev, and Lieutenant Nakhimov. The squadron commander, Vice Admiral Login Petrovich Heyden, strongly supported the crew's initiative. The unveiling of the monument coincided with the first anniversary of midshipman Domashenko's death.

The monument is made in the form of a black cast-iron stele with a commemorative inscription and an image of the stern of the ship "Azov." The top of the stele is adorned with a laurel wreath. The front side reads: "In memory of the humane deed of A. Domashenko on September 9, 1827, off the coast of Sicily." The back side of the stele states: "Officers of the ship Azov to their dear comrade, who jumped from the stern of the ship to save a sailor drowning in the waves and paid with his life for such a humane act." This monument is the oldest in Kronstadt and particularly touches the hearts of people.
