The Zheleznovodsk square, where the monument to Mikhail Yurievich Lermontov is installed, was created around the site under the Travertine cliff on October 18, 1988, the 174th anniversary of the poet's birth. Previously, there was a picturesque grove where Lermontov walked with friends in 1841.

The monument is made of bronze. Its author is the famous Moscow sculptor Leonid Vladimirovich Tazba, a graduate of the V. Surikov Art Institute. Among his other works is the monument to the Eltigen landing in Kerch.

In 1965, Tazba participated in a competition to create a monument to Lermontov for Moscow, which was planned to be installed at the Krasnye Vorota square near the house where the poet was born. However, the winner was another sculptor, Isaac Davidovich Brodsky, and his version of the monument was installed in the capital. Tazba's sculpture remained at the Mytishchi factory in the Moscow region, where it lay for more than twenty years. Only 23 years later did Moscow Lermontov scholars pay attention to it and suggest to the local historians of Zheleznovodsk to install it in the grove near the Iron Mountain. In 1988, the monument was transported to the North Caucasian city, where it still delights local residents and tourists.

Interestingly, Leonid Vladimirovich Tazba did not know the fate of his work for a long time. He learned that his monument to Lermontov was installed in Zheleznovodsk only in 1999, when he was invited by the local History Museum to a celebration dedicated to the great Russian poet.

It is worth noting that in the last years of his life, Mikhail Lermontov often visited Zheleznovodsk for treatment and walks with friends in picturesque places. At that time, Zheleznovodsk was just beginning to be developed, and it attracted the nobility not only with its mineral springs but also with its tranquility and beautiful landscape.
