In 2001, a monument to Fyodor Fyodorovich Ushakov, an outstanding Russian naval commander, scholar, and Orthodox saint, was solemnly unveiled on the embankment of Rostov. The monument is in the form of a bust mounted on a cylindrical granite pedestal, adorned with a bronze wreath. It is located in the center of a granite platform with a flowerbed and a fence made of granite spheres connected by metal chains. To the left of the monument, there is a black metal anchor lying on the chain. Two steps lead up to the monument, and the inscription "Admiral Ushakov" is engraved on the pedestal. The author of the monument is the renowned Rostov sculptor Anatoly Sknarin, who has created many famous monuments.

The appearance of the Ushakov monument on Don land is not accidental. It was here, after graduating from the Naval Cadet Corps, that the young naval officer began his journey to admiral's epaulettes and the glory of a defender of the Fatherland. At that time, Ushakov served in the Don (Azov) flotilla under the command of Admiral Sinyavin, protecting the Azov coast, the lower Don, and the fortress of Azov from enemy attacks. The Russian fleet was rapidly developing, and Midshipman Ushakov was involved in supplying timber for the construction of new ships.

In 1769, in the fortress of St. Dmitry of Rostov, Ushakov was promoted to lieutenant. He remained in the Don and Azov region until the summer of 1775. His service in the Azov expedition became a school of military art for him. The commander later said: "With all my being, I am devoted to service and think of nothing else but the benefit of the state."

Ushakov was a great naval commander who suffered no defeats, lost no ships, and none of his sailors were captured. He dedicated his life to serving Russia and developing its fleet. In addition to his brilliant victories, he paid attention to the construction of the fleet and its technical improvement. His genius talent was combined with Christian values, and even the defeated enemies admired his magnanimity and nobility.

Contemporaries and descendants highly appreciated this great man, and the presence of his monuments in many cities, including Rostov-on-Don, is a testament to that.
