Sculptor Yuri Orekhov was known for his works dedicated to Alexander Pushkin. In addition to monuments in Paris and Rome, in 1999 his statue of the great Russian poet was installed in Vienna's Oberlaa park. Orekhov depicted Pushkin in a traditional tailcoat with a cane in hand. This monument was gifted to Vienna by the Moscow government.

Although Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin himself never visited Vienna and had no direct connection to it, his work has long transcended the borders of Russia. After brief negotiations between Austrian and Russian politicians, it was decided to erect a monument to Pushkin in Vienna, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of the poet's birth.

The project was successfully realized: Yuri Orekhov, who had already created monuments to Pushkin, developed a new sculpture. It was approved, and in the summer of 1999, the monument was ceremoniously unveiled. Over time, the monument has lost some of its original appeal, but it still remains a decoration of Vienna and Oberlaa park.
