The Titov Chambers

Фото 1
In the courtyard of the large "House of Writers" on Lavrushinsky Lane lie the ancient Titov Chambers, a remarkable architectural monument of the 17th-18th centuries and a federal cultural heritage site since 1974.

The first documentary mentions of this urban estate date back to 1739 and 1742, when a census book notes the house of Colonel Vasily Titov. However, the building is much older: in the late 17th century, its owner was the colonel's father, Grigory Titov, head of the Streltsy Order, and in the middle of that century, his grandfather, deacon of the Order of Affairs and a close associate of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, Semyon Titov.

He built the stone chambers that make up the oldest southwestern part of the current building, dated to the 1650s-1660s. This includes the basement and the first floor. The facade of the chambers faced a medieval alley between Bolshaya Ordynka and Lavrushinsky Lane, which has now become Ordynsky Dead End. Researchers consider these chambers an example of a style transitioning from lapidary medieval architecture to the "uzorochye" of the second half of the 17th century. The restored facade decor of the chambers confirms this: the window openings are arranged vertically, and the corners of the volume and the junctions of the interior walls are marked by pilasters. The lintels of the basement floor have simple triangular finishes, while on the main floor, they are semi-circular with keel-like finishes. The facades were also adorned with an expressive frieze of profiled straps.

Inside the building, a portal with a niche for an icon has been preserved, which is a remnant of the vanished Red Porch of the chambers.

In the 17th-18th centuries, the chambers were repeatedly rebuilt and expanded. In the 1670s-1680s, the eastern vaulted chamber appeared. At the turn of the 17th-18th centuries, a third floor was added to the building, possibly after a wooden one. In the mid-18th century, the vaults were relaid, a new two-story volume was added to the northern facade, and the building acquired an L-shape. The facades received new treatment and baroque lintels. In the 19th century, further changes followed; apartments were rented out.

In the 1930s, the "House of Writers" was built on the site of the wings and part of the garden, cutting off the chambers from the city. The ancient building became communal housing for the service staff of the writers' house and remained residential until 1975.

The architectural monument was restored in 1975 and 1980, when its ancient core was highlighted and the decor of the 17th-century facades was partially restored. In 2013-2014, modern restoration was carried out, restoring the ancient color scheme of the southern facade and the baroque decor of the 18th century.

In November 2015, a museum of military history of the Russian Military Historical Society "Streltsy Chambers" opened in the Titov Chambers.
