In the spring of 1395, the army of the Mongol commander Timur, who proclaimed himself the heir to the empire of Genghis Khan and took the title of great emir, invaded Russian lands. Timur burned the border town of Yelets and camped on the Don River, planning an assault on the Moscow principality. The Grand Duke of Moscow, Vasily I, with a hastily assembled army and a people's militia, headed towards Kolomna. However, the forces were clearly unequal. In hope of a miracle, the icon of the Vladimir Mother of God, the main shrine of Zalesye Rus, was carried in a procession from Vladimir to Moscow. The chronicle reports that at Kuchkovo Field, near Moscow, at the Church of Mary of Egypt, built a dozen and a half years earlier, a solemn meeting of the icon took place. The very next day, the Mongol army retreated south into the steppes. In honor of this event, a monastery was founded at the site of the icon's meeting, named the Sretensky Monastery, with a wooden church of the Meeting of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God. In the 17th century, active stone construction began in the monastery. In 1679, a stone five-domed Sretensky Cathedral was erected, along with a belfry and cell buildings. Construction continued in the following decades. In the mid-18th century, two-story stone chambers were built in the southern part of the monastery grounds (modern address: Bolshaya Lubyanka Street, 17, building 1), adorned with baroque trim. After the revolution, the monastery was closed, and between 1928 and 1930, most of its buildings were destroyed. Fortunately, the Sretensky Cathedral and the mentioned chambers were preserved. In the 19th century, the chambers were remodeled according to the architectural fashion of the time and an additional floor was added. Over time, the basement of the chambers became buried under cultural layers, and now only two floors rise above the ground. During the Soviet years, the building was converted into communal apartments and a collection point for secondary raw materials. Currently, the chambers have been returned to the revived monastery and are under state protection.
