It is wonderful that there is a place in Nice associated with the name A.P. Chekhov, possessing a special atmosphere.

Did you know that the hotel was founded in the 1860s? Old guidebooks mention the date '1860'.

Some sources claim that it is the oldest operating hotel in the city, although hotels existed before 1860, but they did not survive.

The hotel was named 'Oasis' because it was built among lush gardens.

In the 19th century, the hotel L’Oasis belonged to a Russian family, which is why it was informally called the 'Russian Boarding House', as guests were offered accommodation and meals.

The 'Russian Boarding House' was very popular among the creative and scientific intelligentsia.

Among its guests were M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, A.P. Chekhov, M.M. Kovalevsky, Lenin, and about 40 other compatriots.

V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko stayed here after losing at the Monte Carlo casino. The artist Joseph Braz painted a portrait of Chekhov, which is considered one of the best depictions of the writer and is now in the Tretyakov Gallery.

In 1875-1876, M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin lived here for a long time, and at the end of the 19th century, A.P. Chekhov spent three winters here. He often had guests, such as the Russian vice-consul in Menton Yurasov, artist Yakobi, director of the Russian zoological station in Villefranche Korotnev, and professor Kovalevsky.

It is known that in 1897, Chekhov was visited at the L’Oasis hotel in Nice by his friend, the artist Alexandra Khotyantseva.

It was here that the writer created many works, such as the stories 'Pecheneg', 'In the Cart', 'In the Native Country', 'With Friends'.

When he was asked to write a story about his stay in Nice, Chekhov replied that he could only do this in Russia, recalling Nice and longing for it.

He said he needed his memory to preserve only important memories, from which a work would be born. Perhaps this is how 'The Lady with the Dog' came to be, inspired by life in Nice.

Today, on the wall of the hotel, you can see a memorial plaque commemorating the visit of V.I. Lenin, who came to Nice in 1909 and 1911 and stayed at the 'Oasis'.
