The "New Journal" is a literary and journalistic publication of the Russian diaspora, published quarterly. It was founded in 1942 in New York by Mark Aldanov and Mikhail Zetlin as a continuation of the Parisian "Contemporary Notes." In its first editorial article, the journal was defined by three key concepts: Russia, freedom, and emigration. From the very beginning, the "New Journal" aimed to attract a wide audience, not limiting it by ideological frameworks, except for Nazism and Communism. The publication features novellas and stories by contemporary Russian writers from both abroad and Russia, modern Russian poetry, as well as previously unpublished works by classics of Russian literature. The journal includes historical and literary studies dedicated to various aspects of the cultural and literary history of Russia and the Russian diaspora, including an extensive archive of documents such as memoirs and letters. It also publishes articles on literary theory and the Russian language, reviews, interviews, and quarterly bibliographic surveys dedicated to contemporary Russian literature abroad. Since 2005, the editor-in-chief of the journal has been Marina Adamovich.
