The Gate Church of St. Prophet Zacharias and Righteous Elizabeth in the Beloberezhskaya John the Baptist Monastery (lost)

Фото 1
In 1744, Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, traveling to Kyiv to venerate the relics of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, donated two thousand rubles in banknotes to the Beloberezhskaya Monastery. With these funds, by 1747 and 1759, a stone church was built at the Holy Gates of the monastery, dedicated to Saints Zacharias and Elizabeth. Later, the empress also gifted the church a chalice, diskos, staritsa, and spoon.

The architecture and decoration of the gate church were quite simple. The central volume, almost cubic in shape, expanded to the west and east due to the low and roughly equal-sized refectory and altar sections. A low faceted dome was topped with a small cupola on a tiny drum. In the late 19th century, the exterior of the church and the adjacent part of the fence were adorned with paintings on biblical themes.
