The museum-estate of A. M. Gerasimov is located in Michurinsk, in a merchant estate from the 19th century. The museum complex includes a residential house, outbuildings, a carriage shed, a cellar, and a barn that the artist converted into a workshop in the 1930s.

The two-story brick house was built in 1886 by the artist's father, Mikhail Safronovich Gerasimov. In this house, Alexander Mikhailovich spent his childhood and youth. After the revolution, he lived here with his family until moving to Moscow in 1925. Despite the move, Gerasimov maintained a connection with his hometown, often visiting and working here. In June 1942, he met with his friend, Marshal of the Soviet Union K. E. Voroshilov, in this house, who was heading to the Rada station to form an army. In memory of this event, a memorial plaque was installed on the building.

The barn made of dark brick is one of the few structures that survived the fire of 1865. Gerasimov transformed it into a workshop, laying the floor with limestone slabs. Two narrow windows provided little light, so in 1934 he made a large window in the end part of the barn. The workshop retains a table, two easels, a stand for the model, brushes, and paints. Nearby, a terrace was arranged, which also served as the artist's workspace. On it, in 1935, Gerasimov painted the landscape "Wet Terrace. After the Rain," a reproduction of which was published for a long time in a Russian language textbook, while the original is kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery.

After the artist's death and that of his sister Alexandra, their housekeeper Darya Mitrofanovna Nagina lived in the house. In the late 1960s, being already elderly, she could not take care of the house, and the buildings needed repairs. In 1971, the public began to raise the issue of opening a museum in the house of the first president of the Academy of Arts of the USSR, People's Artist of the USSR A. M. Gerasimov. After numerous appeals from local historian Nikolai Ivanov, a friend and admirer of the artist's talent, a resolution was adopted in September 1975 to create the House-Museum as a branch of the Tambov Regional Art Gallery. The museum was headed by Tamara Ilyinichna Voronova, an employee of the Michurinsk Local History Museum. The restoration of the house and workshop was carried out quickly, and the museum opened on March 16, 1977. It houses authentic items from the Gerasimov family, furniture, documents, and photographs. The exhibition in three rooms of the house reflects the main events of Gerasimov's life and creativity. Five rooms are memorial, while the former kitchen and pantry are used as service rooms for the museum.

In 1981, to mark the 100th anniversary of A. M. Gerasimov's birth, an exhibition hall was built according to the project of architect Alexander Sergeevich Lun'kin, where the largest collection of the artist's works is presented.
