After extensive preparation, five expedition members set off to the pole on skis, accompanied by 52 dogs that carried four sleds with food, tents, and other necessary items. This took place on October 20, 1911. The first 300 kilometers of the route were pre-marked with poles, flags, and other landmarks, even set up between depots for easier navigation. The last depot the polar explorers visited was on November 5 in thick fog, and from there their path lay through uncharted territory.

On December 14 at 15:00, Amundsen and his team finally reached the South Pole.
