The museum-apartment of Academician Y. B. Khariton was opened on February 27, 1999, on the day of his 95th birthday.

Yuliy Borisovich lived in a cottage on Zelenaya Street from 1972 to 1996. In the late 1960s, his house on Parkovyy Lane, where he settled in 1947, had become very dilapidated, as had the neighboring cottage of the chief designer E. A. Negin. In this regard, the management of VNIITF decided to build new housing for its leading employees.

A quiet location at the corner of Zelenaya and Naberezhnaya Streets in the northwestern part of the engineering and technical workers' settlement was chosen for the construction of a cottage for two families.

Construction began on July 18, 1970, and lasted just over a year. On January 4, 1972, the city council executive committee approved the act of the state commission for the commissioning of the house, obliging the builders to eliminate all deficiencies by June 1. The order for occupancy was received by the new residents on October 25, 1972.

Yuliy Borisovich lived on Zelenaya Street for over twenty years. Since 1999, his apartment has become a memorial and operates as a branch of the museum of nuclear weapons of RFYAC-VNIITF. The museum-apartment's collection includes over 1000 exhibits, among which personal belongings of Yuliy Borisovich are particularly valuable, including state awards, photographs, and documents. Visitors can see the conditions in which the great scientist lived and worked, and his library, which contains over 6000 volumes, attests to his diverse interests.
