The Museum of the History of Kola Sámi was founded in 1962 by geography teacher Pavel Polikarpovich Yuryev at the base of Lovozero Secondary School. In 1968, it became a territorial department of the Murmansk Regional Local History Museum.

Since 1987, the museum's exhibitions have been housed in a separate building, a former district cultural center, occupying over 300 square meters.

The museum's exhibits illuminate the history, culture, and way of life of the Sámi, the indigenous people of the Kola Peninsula. This small northern people also live in northern Finland, Sweden, and Norway.

The modern exhibition of the museum was arranged in 1990.

Among the sections of the exhibition are: the ancient history of the Sámi people, the development of the Lovozero district in the 1920s-1930s, the contribution of the home front during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, the economic and cultural development of the district in the 1950s-1980s, the development of reindeer herding as a traditional industry of the Sámi, and the way of life of the small indigenous peoples of the Kola North.

A particular interest is aroused by the museum's archaeological collection, which includes a stone with petroglyphs dating back to the 1st millennium BC, as well as a collection of applied art and household items of the Sámi.
