The Museum of the History of Ulan-Ude combines historical collections and interactive exhibitions, creative workshops, thematic projects, and events, supporting the initiatives of talented youth. Its mission is to preserve and popularize history, as well as to support and develop the creative process in Ulan-Ude.

The museum was founded on December 10, 1999, and in March 2001, it was located in the main house of the merchant Ivan Flegontovich Goldobin's estate.

Here, a collection of exhibits is gathered, providing visual and informational interaction with visitors, creating an educational environment and a platform for communication and the realization of creative projects. The museum actively conducts tours and develops museum pedagogy, organizing various interactive activities on the history of the city. Since 2011, the museum has operated a cinema courtyard, which is the only open space in the city for film lovers. The main content of the cinema courtyard includes film screenings, art house, independent cinema, and film classics.

In 2017, the museum received a diploma at the X International Review-Competition of Urban Practices of the CIS and EAEU "A City Where You Want to Live" for organizing the open space "Cinema Courtyard." In the same year, it was awarded a grant for the project "Old Photograph" in the competition of the administration of Ulan-Ude in the field of culture and art. In February 2018, the museum received a grant from the government of the Republic of Buryatia for the project "Territory of SEM," aimed at improving the museum's inner courtyard, creating a recreation area and a platform for thematic events. The project was implemented from 2018 to 2019. In July 2018, the museum participated in a municipal grant competition with the project "Multistory about My City."

In February 2019, the museum presented the project "I Love You, Ulan-Ude!" at the grant competition of the government of the Republic of Buryatia. Since April 2019, the museum has started a new project of summer expedition gatherings "Museum to the City."

The museum's collections hold household items from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including antique dishes, furniture, clothing, and samples of weapons from Cossacks and Red Army soldiers, totaling more than 2,500 items.

In the first hall, visitors are greeted by the permanent exhibition "Urban Tales" featuring paintings by Sergey Emelyanov, created in the pointillism style, which creates the effect of an old photograph. These paintings reflect the main stages of the development of Verkhneudinsk up to the Soviet era.

Among the interesting exhibits of the museum is a piano from the late 19th century by Hupfer from Germany, a collection of antique samovars, one of which belonged to Goldobin's cook, and an antique wardrobe with stained glass in the Art Nouveau style, produced in Germany in the late 19th century.

An antique spiral staircase, made to order for Goldobin, leads to the second floor of the museum. This staircase was ascended by Tsarevich Nikolai when he visited I.F. Goldobin during his visit to Verkhneudinsk.
