The Museum of the History of the City, a branch of the Kurgan Regional Local History Museum, was opened in May 2006. Its exhibition is located in a merchant's mansion that previously belonged to the first guild merchant Semyon Ivanovich Berezin, and later to his son Fyodor. After the owners' death, the estate was acquired by the city for the placement of the district treasury, and the building was slightly reconfigured. During the Soviet period, from 1927 to 1980, it housed the regional archive. In 1987, the estate was transferred to the Kurgan Regional Local History Museum, and the restoration of the building lasted about 20 years. This ancient mansion, a monument of 19th-century architecture, is the only stone estate of urban type in the Trans-Urals, preserving a closed courtyard with outbuildings and a central house in the style of Russian classicism.

The museum's exhibition highlights the political, economic, social, and cultural aspects of Kurgan's development, from the founding of the Tsarevo Gorodishche settlement to 1917, emphasizing the role of the county town in Siberian history.

The museum conducts overview and thematic tours, as well as walking and bus tours around the city, lectures, discussions, concerts, and meetings with interesting people.
