The old building in Nikolsk, Penza region, has a rich history. At different times, it housed a cinema, a sports school, and a union of the local glass factory. Before the 1917 revolution, this structure belonged to Alexander Obolensky, the owner of a large glass and crystal factory, whose products were supplied even to the Imperial Court.

After the events of October 1917, many industrialists emigrated, and only the old manager remained in the house. It was then that information about underground passages beneath the house emerged, consisting of 100 galleries. 99 of them were found, but the location of the hundredth remains a mystery. It was searched for until the mid-20th century, as it was believed that aristocrats hid their treasures there, which they did not manage to take abroad.

The catacombs are associated with eerie legends, including that of the ghost of one of the first owners of the factory, Alexei Bakhmetev. In the 1930s, when there was a cinema here, about a hundred viewers allegedly saw his ghost. The newspaper "Krasny Stekolyshchik" reported this case: a man in a ceremonial uniform with golden epaulettes and a saber walked along the balcony and descended the stairs, after which he disappeared.

After the war, builders working in the former church, converted into a grain storage, discovered a tomb beneath the building. In a lead coffin, they found the remains of a man in a ceremonial uniform, with a sword, rings with diamonds, and a cane. Although the flesh had decayed, the uniform and jewelry were preserved. The remains were not reburied but thrown into a ravine. Since then, many believe that this was the ghost of Alexei Bakhmetev, who wandered through the former estate.
