The Murder Site of Stepan Bandera

Фото 1
Coronations in cathedrals and executions in squares are harder to imagine than events that occurred in a more mundane setting. In an ordinary Munich house on Kreittmayrstrasse, 7, at noon on October 15, 1959, KGB agent Bohdan Stashynsky killed Stepan Bandera by shooting him with a poisoned pistol.

The agent shot the victim in the face right on the first floor near the mailboxes. Everything happened quietly, and Stashynsky quickly disappeared into the crowd. The attention of neighbors was drawn by Bandera's scream, who, poisoned with cyanide, fell on the steps and cracked his head.

The cause of Bandera's death was not established at the time, and everything became known only three years later when Stashynsky fled the USSR to the West. Trying to hide from the KGB in a German prison, he long convinced the West German court of his seemingly incredible story about spies, the Ukrainian underground, a former leader, and a poisoned pistol. All of this is hard to imagine on an ordinary landing by the mailboxes. However, it cannot be said that something epochal happened in this place. It was already 1959, and the deceased was more of a legend than an active leader. But something about this place still evokes a special feeling.
