Memorial Cemetery for Victims of Totalitarian Regime in Abey

Фото 1
The memorial cemetery for victims of the totalitarian regime is located on the outskirts of the village of Abey. The first burials here date back to 1947 and 1948. The majority of the burials occurred in 1949 and 1957, when prisoners from Camp No. 1 of the Mineral Correctional Labor Camp (Abey Invalid Camp of Minlag) were buried here. Initially, burials were conducted in common graves, but from 1952 individual graves began to be used, with posts marking the burial sites. Approximately 2000 people rest in the cemetery. An archival list has been compiled, including over 1000 prisoners of Minlag buried here. In 1989, the cemetery began to be improved and memorialized: a bell and a memorial plaque with the inscription "Here lie thousands" were installed, as well as the first memorial sign, a pyramid made of iron with a wreath of barbed wire and a wooden plaque: "To the innocent victims of the repressions of the 30s and 50s. Eternal memory. Eternal peace." In 1990, the Vilnius Society of Political Exiles erected the monument "Burning Cross" 200 meters from the cemetery (author, Lithuanian sculptor Jonas Juodishius, son of General I. Juodishius, who died in the camp). In July 1996, the Lviv society "Poshuk" installed a commemorative metal cross with an inscription in Ukrainian: "Eternal memory to the political prisoners of Intlag, who perished in Abey in 1946 and 1954" (project author I. Fedushchak). In 1999, two commemorative crosses were erected for Poles and Belarusians who died in captivity (author F. A. Ignatov). In 2003, the Inta Local History Museum reconstructed about 500 surviving wooden number plates in metal, and this work continued in 2009 and 2012. Since 1990, several dozen personal memorial signs have been installed in the cemetery, including for philosopher L. P. Karsavin (1882, 1952), General Jonas Juodishius (1892, 1950), historian N. N. Punin (1888, 1953), and many others.
