In the center of Berlin, there is a building that houses the monument "Mother with Dead Son" by Käthe Kollwitz. Since 1993, this place has become the main memorial to the victims of war and tyranny in the country. Previously, an eternal flame burned here in memory of the victims of fascism, as the guard building of the Hohenzollern Palace was located in the Soviet occupation zone.

Kollwitz's monument evokes the well-known scene of the Virgin Mary mourning Christ, often seen in European art. In the USSR, Käthe Kollwitz's work was valued, as she was considered a socialist. However, the artist herself did not identify with either socialists or communists, believing that humanitarian ideals were the foundation of her creativity.

Käthe Kollwitz wrote about the revolution in Russia: "Russia opened new perspectives. Something new came into the world from there, which in my eyes seems undoubtedly good. Even if it is suppressed, for at least some time the dream that noble impulses shook the foundations of the world, or at least part of them, became a reality. And this alone can be called a victory." The artist's interest in Russia arose long before the revolution and was connected to Russian literature, especially its unique understanding of God. Germans seemed to Kollwitz too grounded, practical, people of "head" rather than heart. She wondered: "Can people born in the same country as Kant soar and attack as compatriots of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky?"

A copy of her work "Grieving Parents" is installed in the Peace Park near Rzhev. Wars took both her son and grandson from Käthe Kollwitz, and her sculptural composition calls for peace.
