In Kyiv, there is an architectural wonder known as the Lukyanivka Terem. This building resembles a fairytale palace and has adorned the capital for many decades. Interestingly, it belonged to the local Society of Sobriety. Here, there was a cultural and educational center that fought against alcoholism. The house was built in 1902 in the neo-Russian style, with elements of 17th-century architecture. The columns of the second floor, pointed windows, corners with kokoshniks, and bright decorations give the building the appearance of a terem. The name Lukyanivka House is associated with its location in the historic district of Lukyanivka.

In this center for people struggling with alcoholism, lectures on the harm of alcohol were held, meetings with doctors took place, and evening classes were conducted to teach various professions and help find jobs. There was also a public canteen, a library, and accommodation for visitors. The center successfully contributed to the return of many to a sober lifestyle.

However, there were some amusing incidents. Nearby, there was a wine shop, and sometimes tipsy citizens would come to the canteen demanding vodka. These antics annoyed the members of the Society of Sobriety, and they appealed to the Kyiv administration to close the shop. After that, visits from drunken jokers ceased.

The Lukyanivka House also played an important role in the cultural life of Kyiv. In 1910, the city's first cinema opened here. The Society of Sobriety ceased its activities during the Civil War. After nationalization, the building was transferred to the Tram Workers' Club, and today it houses the Small Opera of Ukraine.
