The museum was established at the initiative of the district council of veterans of war and labor with the support of the district branch of the Soviet Peace Fund and the Kumensky village council of people's deputies. Its opening took place on May 9, 1991, thanks to the Department of Culture and Cinema of the Kumensky district administration. The first director was Pavel Fedorovich Berdnikov. Visitors show great interest in exhibits related to peasant life, such as clothing and household items, as well as awards, documents, and front-line relics of participants in the Great Patriotic War. The museum features items from the war years found in the Novgorod region by members of the search squad 'Dolg.'

Particular interest is aroused by the works of local artist and ethnographer A.V. Fishev, which attract both adults and children. His works not only convey the beauty of the native land but also introduce the beauty of human faces and distant places. Books and albums published by his son M.A. Fishev after the artist's death tell about his life and creativity, as well as familiarize readers with the customs, traditions, and folklore of the Vyatka village at the end of the 19th century.
