The museum was founded in 1984. Its building, a historical monument of local significance, was constructed in 1872 at the initiative and design of I.N. Ulyanov to house a two-class school of the Ministry of Education with a craft department.
The main collection of the museum contains over 4500 items.
The museum's exhibition occupies five halls. In addition to traditional sections dedicated to the ancient and modern history of the area, significant attention is given to the unique nature of Prissurye and the development of public education in the region.
A poetry club "Revival" operates successfully at the museum.
Museum staff organize walking tours to the shrine of the Sursk land, Nikolskaya Mountain.
