The museum was founded in 1919, ceased operations in 1956, but reopened to visitors 30 years later. Its halls showcase the history, culture, and everyday life of the region from the 3rd-2nd millennia BC to the present day. Currently, the Skopino Local History Museum's exhibition is quite extensive and includes eight thematic halls.

In the antiquities hall, unique exhibits found during archaeological excavations in the area can be seen. Here, mammoth tusks, bones of long-haired buffaloes that once inhabited these lands are presented. The exhibition also features tools used by ancient people, fragments of pottery, and other artifacts. The majority of the exhibits date back to the 3rd-1st millennia BC.

The Streltsy hall covers the period of the 15th-18th centuries. As the name suggests, weapons from that time are displayed here: chain mail, spears, arrowheads, as well as firearms and cannons. Of particular value are ancient coins and a life mask of Peter I. In the hall dedicated to peasant life, visitors can see everyday items from the lives of Skopino peasants in the 19th century, including women's peasant costumes. There is also an exhibition that tells about the merchant lifestyle of that time, featuring furniture, clothing, and a collection of porcelain.

Additionally, the museum has halls dedicated to the Great Patriotic War, miners, and the artistic and theatrical activities of the region.
