The museum began welcoming visitors in December 1994 and has become an important cultural center of the city over its existence. Annually, more than six thousand people visit its halls, and the collections contain over six thousand exhibits. The museum operates six days a week and includes five exhibition halls: ethnography, nature of the region, patriotic, and an exhibition hall.

The ethnographic exhibition features household items, bead jewelry, national clothing, models of Khanty dwellings, hunting tools, and means of transportation. The history of the city can be studied through photographs from the museum's collections, which are the only witnesses to its changes. The exhibitions help to learn not only about everyday life but also about the fates of people.

The archaeological collection showcases the centuries-old history of the Pokachi land: fragments of ceramics, metal items, bronze jewelry, and leather goods, dating from the 3rd millennium BC to modern times. The nature hall of the region is particularly popular with visitors: here you can see bears, foxes, wolves, and various birds, including marsh, game, and predatory birds.

The exhibition hall offers displays by local artists and masters of decorative and applied arts, as well as traveling exhibitions from museums in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. The museum actively develops various forms of work. For preschoolers, there are playful excursions, for middle school students, quizzes and educational programs, and for high school students, integrated lessons about their native land.

The museum implements programs on ethnography, the history of the region, visual arts, and patriotic education, establishing close contacts with educational institutions. Children with disabilities visit the museum, participating in art exhibitions and classes, which contributes to their socio-cultural rehabilitation. The program "Step Towards" helps them feel like equal members of society.

Monthly events are held for pensioners, including creative meetings and master classes, which promote their social activity and broaden their horizons. Environmental education occupies an important place in the museum's activities. The program "Know and Love Your Land" fosters ecological culture among preschoolers, while older children participate in ecology events and the "Save and Preserve" campaign.

Patriotic education is realized through a project that includes meetings with veterans, lectures, and excursions on the history of the district and the city. The museum, like the city, is developing, gaining traditions, and this becomes part of the overall history of the region.
