The Local History Museum in Kichmengsky Gorodok opened on April 22, 1983, in the building of the former editorial office and printing house. Residents of the area actively donated antique items, documents, photographs, and family relics to the museum.

Until 1989, the museum operated on a voluntary basis, after which it became a branch of the Vologda Museum-Reserve. Since 1991, it has held the status of an independent cultural institution. In 2000, the museum was transferred a two-story stone building of the former household services combine, which allowed for the expansion of exhibitions.

Visitors are greeted by an art gallery, where exhibitions of local artists, both professionals and amateurs, including young masters, take place. The exhibition "Ancient Period. Settlement of the Region" tells about the history of the region from the Mesolithic to the 17th century. Display cases with remains of ancient animals and the artistic design of the hall provide insight into the region's fauna.

The archaeological collection includes tools of ancient people and samples of ceramics. Archaeological finds from the Ancient Gorodishche, including household items and weapons, tell about the history of the Kichmeng fortress, built on the site of the Chud tower for protection against enemies until the 17th century. The panorama "Gorodok on Kichmenka" by S. A. Menshenin, based on chronicles, illustrates the appearance of the defensive fortress.

The exhibition "Orthodoxy in the Region" is dedicated to the development of Orthodox traditions and the people who devoted themselves to serving God. The stands feature materials about the clergy of the region, theologian N. N. Glubokovsky, and Saint Simon of Volomsk.

The next hall of the museum showcases peasant and petty-bourgeois life and the development of crafts, including blacksmithing, weaving, and woodworking. The interior of a Russian izba particularly attracts children's attention.

The exhibition "20th Century" tells about fellow countrymen who participated in events of that time, starting from the Russo-Japanese War, and the development of the region during this period. Special attention is given to the Great Patriotic War, with documents, photographs, awards, and personal belongings that tell about the lives and feats of the residents of the area.

One section is dedicated to the sailors' club, uniting fellow countrymen who served in the navy. Here, photo documents about the service of sailors, their feats, personal belongings, and models of sea vessels are presented.
