Bell Tower in Krasnye Ryady, Kostroma

Фото 1
The bell tower, designed in the early classical style, featured a strictly centralized four-tier composition. Its base was quadrangular with large semicircular openings. Above it was the bell ringing tier with high arched openings framed by paired Tuscan columns and an entablature. The roof, executed in baroque style, had dormers and a light lantern with a spire. The bell tower was located on the axis of the passage starting from the portico of the Presence Places and passing through Krasnye Ryady, Prjanichnye Ryady, and Rybnye Ryady, creating striking perspectives. Its silhouette, visible from the courtyard of Krasnye Ryady, was light and idyllic, but from the opposite side, it acquired grandeur. Moving from the Volga, the viewer saw the bell tower above the southern facade of Prjanichnye Ryady, but as they approached, it disappeared from view. The climax occurred when, climbing the stairs, the viewer saw the majestic portico with the bell tower. The impression was enhanced by the low horizon. From the upper step, a view opened onto the courtyard of Krasnye Ryady, the colonnades of Melokhny Ryady, and the portico of the Presence Places. The bell tower played an important role in the ensemble of the central square, echoing with the watchtower and uniting the arcades of the rows. In the 1930s, the bell tower, like many other churches, was destroyed, and the Church of the Savior was turned into a warehouse, impoverishing the ensemble of the center of Kostroma. The study of the remains of the bell tower and photographs from 1908 allowed for the creation of a restoration project. A railing grid was found in the attic of Krasnye Ryady, the dimensions of which matched the project specifications. The project provides for the restoration of only the bell tower, with the question of the church postponed. The main masonry will be made of silicate bricks, cornices and belts from red bricks, and the modillions of the cornices from white stone for durability. The building will be reinforced with iron ties, and the roof and spire framework will also be made of iron. The walls will be plastered, cornices and archivolts will be stretched according to templates, and the stairs will be restored inside. The finished building will be covered with lime whitewash, the roof and spire will be painted with copper, and the cross and details beneath it will be gilded. The height of the structure to the top of the cross will be 42 meters, the restored part will be 33 meters, and the width of the base will be 8.8 meters.
