Bell Tower of the Nikolaevsky Starotorzhsky Monastery in Galich

Фото 1
The monastery bell tower was planned to be built above the eastern gate of the enclosure, opposite the cemetery, but due to the weakness of the soil, this turned out to be impossible. As a result, in 1894, the bell tower was erected above the gates in the northwestern part of the enclosure, based on a design reminiscent of the bell tower of the Kostroma Epiphany-Anastasia Monastery. In the 1930s, during the destruction of the monastery, it was demolished; however, its foundation with the gates and several photographs from the early 20th century remain, allowing for its reconstruction.

Even from the photographs, it is evident that by the end of the 19th century, Russian church architecture had declined. The lower tier of the bell tower, with its majestic arch of the gates and paired apses from the side of the monastery courtyard, although it carries elements of eclecticism, is still original and artistic. At the same time, the octagonal tented part of the bell tower appears clumsy and an unsuccessful imitation of the Kostroma model.

Nevertheless, it is worth noting that even in this challenging time for architecture, some continuity was maintained: the height of the bell tower was 43 meters, just like the bell tower of the Church of Basil the Great in Rybnaya Sloboda, as well as the Epiphany tented bell tower in the Trading Square, both from the 18th century.

A restoration project for the bell tower of the Starotorzhsky Monastery has already been prepared, and work is underway on a phased restoration project for the entire monastery complex.
