Today we will tell you about the outstanding Russian ballerina and silent film actress Vera Alexeyevna Karalli. She was born in the Russian Empire but spent a significant part of her life abroad. Vera was born on August 8, 1889, into the family of director Karalli-Tortsov, who worked at the Yaroslavl Theater named after Volkov. Officially, she was considered his adopted daughter, but rumors circulated in the capital that she was actually his sister and the illegitimate daughter of a Greek diplomat, the director's father.

From an early age, Vera Alexeyevna was passionate about the arts. In 1906, she graduated from the Russian Theater School, where her mentor was the famous choreographer Alexander Alekseevich Gorsky. Soon she became a sought-after ballerina and toured with Sergei Diaghilev's 'Russian Ballet.' Vera actively participated in ballet productions and acted in silent films, making her one of the first movie stars of the early 20th century. Her personal life was also successful: she lived for a long time in a civil marriage with the famous singer Leonid Vitalievich Sobinov, a symbol of Russian opera alongside Shalyapin.

In 1917, Vera Alexeyevna's familiar world collapsed, and she decided to leave her homeland. In the following years, she performed and taught in Lithuania, Romania, France, and Austria. In her personal life, she was happy in her marriage to White officer Boris Alexandrovich Shishkin, with whom she died almost simultaneously. Vera Alexeyevna passed away on November 16, 1972, taking with her the secret of Grigori Rasputin's death, of which she was a witness, being the lover of one of his murderers, Grand Duke Dmitry Pavlovich.
