At the site of the former Old Believer cemetery lie the remains of unknown Russian warriors who fell in the Battle of Kagul in 1770 against Turkish invaders for the Christian faith. The memory of the heroic pages of Russian-Moldovan history continues to live on in modern Moldova. In 2014, a memorial cross was erected at this site in Kagul, and for the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Kagul, it was decided to open a monument to the warriors who died in the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774.

The opening of the monument was attended by representatives of the clergy from Old Believer churches, the Kagul Protection of the Holy Virgin Church, and the Kishinev Mazaraki Church. A memorial service and the consecration of the monument were held. The event was attended by representatives of the city and district administration, members of the Russian-Slavic and Old Believer communities of the city, parishioners of the church, and guests from Kishinev. Among them were Alexey Petrovich, the chairman of the Coordinating Council of Russian compatriots, writer Pavel Lyubich, the initiator of the monument's creation, employees of the Russian Center for Science and Culture, cultural figures, and journalists. The speakers emphasized the importance of preserving historical memory for future generations, honored the memory of the fallen warriors, and expressed confidence that memorial events would be held here annually. The presence of the Honor Guard of the Kagul Brigade of the Ministry of Defense added special solemnity to the ceremony. A gun salute in honor of the heroes who fell 250 years ago for the Fatherland and Faith became the final chord of the monument's opening.

In the battle at Kagul 250 years ago, the Russian army, numbering no more than 17,000 infantry and several thousand cavalry, defeated an Ottoman army of 150,000.
