At the end of 1891, a city cemetery was opened in Novorossiysk, located between Anapskaya Street (now Vidova), Stavropolskaya, Chaikovskaya, and Ksenievskaya (now Klara Zetkin). The area of the cemetery was about 20,000 fathoms and had a rectangular shape. Construction of the Assumption Church began on its territory, overseen by a committee specially created by the City Duma.

On November 23, 1904, the City Duma discussed the issue of consecrating the new Assumption Church. After accepting the report from the Administration on the completion of construction, the Duma allocated 300 rubles for the consecration and expressed gratitude to the chairman of the construction committee, M.F. Penchul, and all committee members for their work and donations for the benefit of the new church.

In everyday life and in the City Duma, the Assumption Church was often referred to as the Cemetery Church; however, in official documents of that time, it was listed as "City Cemetery at the Assumption Church." Today, on the territory where the Assumption Church once stood (the former city cemetery), there is a military hospital building on Vidova Street, next to the church.

Since 1945, the church has continued to operate.
