Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Solikamsk

The Holy Trinity Summer Cathedral is the central element of the architectural ensemble of Solikamsk. Its construction began in 1684 with the blessing of the Vyatka bishop Jonah Baranov and with funds from local residents. According to legend, when the funds ran out, the builders turned to the tsars for help. In 1688, by the decree of Ivan and Peter Alexeyevich and Tsarevna Sophia, 200 rubles were allocated from the Novgorod order to complete the construction of the cathedral. This money allowed not only to finish the church but also to decorate it. In memory of the royal donation, a tile with a coat of arms was inserted into the southern wall of the church, which, unfortunately, was destroyed after the 1917 revolution.

The cathedral had three altars: the main one, consecrated in honor of the Holy Trinity in 1697, the southern one, in honor of John the Baptist in 1689, and the western one, in honor of Saint Nicholas in 1693. In the 18th-19th centuries, the cathedral became a parish church, and in 1916, it became a cathedral. It remained active until 1929, despite attempts to close it. In 1929, the cathedral was closed, and its property was destroyed.

That same year, the building was handed over to the local history museum. After repairs, exhibitions dedicated to the history of Solikamsk and agriculture were placed in the cathedral. In 1938, the exhibition was closed, but the building was used as a warehouse during the war. In the 1960s-1970s, the cathedral was restored. In 1982, it was again handed over to the museum, and since 1992, it has housed an exhibition dedicated to the local holiday of the Ninth Friday.

Despite discussions about transferring the cathedral to the Church, it remains under the museum's management. The architecture of the cathedral, with its five domes and rich decor, has been almost completely preserved. Special attention is drawn to the teremy porches and the bug ornament, characteristic of Solikamsk monuments. The cathedral also housed warehouses for merchant goods. In 1943, the spire of the bell tower collapsed but was restored in 1957. Currently, the museum's nature department is located in the bell tower.
