The Annunciation Church in Kharkiv is one of the oldest in the city. Its history is closely linked to the founding of Kharkiv. There is little information about the first wooden structures of the church, and it is of a random nature. The main sources of information about the Annunciation Church of that time are the "Kuryazh Records," "Metric Books," and the "Inventory of the Church" from 1775.

The first Annunciation Church was built no later than 1655, simultaneously with other churches in the city. It was located in a settlement known as Zalopan and was wooden, with one priest and a small congregation. By 1720, the congregation had expanded, and two priests were serving there. The church burned down in 1738, and a new wooden church, a copy of the previous one, was built in its place. In 1789, the construction of a stone church began, completed in 1794 under the project of architect P.A. Yaroslavsky.

Among the benefactors of the church were Lieutenant Colonel Mikhail Ivanovich Batezatul, Counselor Anastasia Petrovna Dupina, and merchant Mikhail Nechaev. In 1836, the reconstruction of the side chapels began, completed in 1839 thanks to the efforts of merchant Alexander Dmitrievich Skrypnik.

In 1858, the church was described as stone with three altars and a bell tower. In 1887, it was decided to build a new temple, and in 1888, its construction began under the guidance of architect Mikhail Ivanovich Lovtsov. The new temple was completed in 1901 and amazed with its size and architectural decoration.

After the 1917 revolution, the history of the cathedral became tragic. In 1930, the cathedral was closed, and its premises were used for other purposes. It was reopened in 1943. In 1948, the relics of saints were transferred to the cathedral, and since 1946 it has held the status of a cathedral. In 1993, the relics of Hieromartyr Alexander Petrovsky were added to the cathedral.

The cathedral has survived several misfortunes, including hurricanes and a fire in 1997, but was restored thanks to the efforts of the faithful. Today, the Holy Annunciation Cathedral is an important part of Kharkiv's architectural and spiritual heritage.
