The museum is located in one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, which is a monument of civil architecture. It was built in 1797 according to a standard project by architect V. I. Bazhenov for the Vyazniki merchant I. Kashin. Later, the building was acquired by the Elizarov merchants, who owned it until the revolution. This stone three-story structure features a high portico, balcony, and columns on the facade. On July 10, 1919, the building was transferred for use as a museum, and the first exhibition opened on November 7, 1919, which is considered the day the museum was established in Vyazniki.
The first exhibits were 35 paintings by Russian artists from the private collection of Vyazniki manufacturer S. I. Senkov. Today, the collection includes works by Russian and foreign masters from the 18th and early 20th centuries. Here you can see landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and genre paintings that delight the eye. Among the authors are A. P. Bogolyubov, N. A. Klodt, A. A. Kiselev, S. Yu. Zhukovsky, K. V. Lebedev, V. E. Makovsky, the Benois brothers, A. A. Pisemsky, I. L. Gorokhov, A. A. Girv. The collection is complemented by porcelain from the first private factories of Gardner, Popov, and the Korinlov brothers, glass, crystal, walnut and mahogany furniture, as well as urban costumes. The residents of Vyazniki take pride in the heroic past of their fellow countrymen.
On this land, 26 Heroes of the Soviet Union and Russia were born and raised. An exhibition titled "Soldiers of Victory" tells their stories. In honor of the twice Hero, pilot-cosmonaut V. N. Kubasov, a bronze bust has been installed in the city, and his journey into space is illuminated by the photo exhibition "The Road to Space Laid Out." The exhibition "From the History of the District City of Vyazniki" is dedicated to the city's history. The diversity of local fauna is represented by stuffed animals and birds in the interiors of a forest and lake corner. A unique exhibit of the museum is a steam engine by D. Watt with a power of 12 horsepower, which was used to drive weaving machines. It was purchased and installed at the V. Elizarov factory in 1862 and has survived to this day as the only one of its kind.
