The museum was opened in May 1995 in anticipation of the Great Victory celebration. Its exhibitions are dedicated to the history of the Mari region and the Medvedev land, including archaeological finds, household items, and tools from the 13th to the 19th centuries, as well as events from the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War.

The museum's natural corner attracts a variety of fauna. The religious section reflects the three main religions practiced by the local population: traditional paganism, Orthodoxy, and Islam. The modern walk of fame is dedicated to the present day.

The museum has a spacious exhibition hall where various events and exhibitions are held. Visitors are offered tours, lectures, educational programs, workshops, and lessons on different topics.
