For many years, the ancient Gorokhovets has been working towards the creation of its museum. Over 300 residents of the city and the region donated around 3,000 items, documents, and photographs. Careful work was carried out before everything collected became museum exhibits that tell the rich history of the Gorokhovets region and its inhabitants.

The first exhibitions were about the wildlife of the Gorokhovets region, the history of costumes, a collection of samovars, as well as displays dedicated to the feats of local heroes during the Great Patriotic War. Materials were presented about the Gorokhovets land in the Stone and Bronze Ages, the settlement of Lysaya Gora, the Vladimir-Suzdal principality, and the pre-reform period. Special attention was paid to the abolition of serfdom and the development of the revolutionary movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Soviet period occupied a significant place in the museum, including organizations, collective farms, and state farms of the region, as well as industry. The first director of the museum was Anna Stepanovna Zakharova. Thanks to her efforts, numerous memories and testimonies about the establishment of Soviet power in the region were collected, as well as about fellow countrymen who participated in the Civil and Great Patriotic Wars. She also gathered many items related to different eras of life in the Gorokhovets region.

With each passing year, the number of exhibits increases; the museum strives to find and acquire interesting artifacts from various eras and continues to collect memories from residents about events of past years. The museum has become an integral part of Gorokhovets, which itself is an open-air museum. Interest in Gorokhovets museums is growing, attracting more and more tourists. Local residents are increasingly interested in their region, bringing their children and guests to the museum, continuing to marvel at the rich history of the city.
