Giant on Rozhdestvenka

The capital street where the Moscow International Trade Bank is located has an interesting name. Few know that the history of this building dates back to 1620. In the early 20th century, a unique restaurant opened in this monumental structure, becoming a favorite spot for wealthy Muscovites.

In the 17th century, the lands on Rozhdestvenka Street were owned by the nobleman Ivan Koltovsky, who bequeathed his property to the church. In 1638, these lands belonged to the Suzdal Protection Monastery, and a hundred years later became part of the Church of Joachim and Anna. Subsequently, the estate did not have significant events in its history: it passed from one prosperous owner to another and accumulated new buildings. The plot was divided into two parts, on which two buildings, two- and three-storied, were constructed.

The lower floors were rented out to merchants by the then owners, merchant Mikhail Komarov and councilor Zasetsky. Over time, shoe, jewelry, tobacco, and flower shops were located here. Later, the premises were rented out to tenants.

At the end of the 19th century, the buildings were renovated at the request of the new owner, merchant Ivan Firsanov. After his death, the estate passed to his daughter Vera. In 1895, the estate was purchased by the owners of the trade bank, led by financier Lazar Polyakov, who decided to build a luxurious and prestigious building on this site.

Architect Semyon Eibushits, working on the project, chose the neo-Renaissance style, inspired by the Bank of the Holy Spirit in Italy. Indeed, the buildings are very similar. The Moscow bank was built in 1898, and eleven years later merged with the United Bank.

Soon, the building became known for its restaurant with the unusual name "Kvisisano." Visitors were amazed: there were no waiters, and food and drinks were dispensed by machines. You just had to drop in coins, a real novelty for the early 20th century.

From 1917 to 1989, the building on Rozhdestvenka served as a savings bank, an institute, and various banks. Today, this majestic building also houses a financial organization.
