The complex, which includes two churches, is located on one of the central streets of the city. Both buildings, the cold Transfiguration Cathedral and the warm Annunciation Cathedral, with the latter situated slightly to the north, face the street with their western facades.

Pre-revolutionary historical and archaeological sources mention that an ancient monastery with a wooden Transfiguration church existed at this site, which was later replaced by a stone cathedral dedicated to the same. In 1609, the monastery was burned down by a detachment of Colonel A. Lisovsky and was never restored, while its cathedral church became a parish church. In 1774, thanks to the efforts of Bishop Simon II of Kostroma and Galich, a new Transfiguration Cathedral was built nearby, slightly to the south, which still exists today. The old church was dismantled due to its dilapidation in the early 19th century. In its place, commissioned by the former mayor of Galich A.A. Levshin, the Annunciation Cathedral was erected between 1808 and 1815. At the same time, the area around both temples was enclosed by a brick fence, which included a bell tower on the western side of the Transfiguration Cathedral.

Today, both buildings, despite the loss of their finishes and later extensions, remain prominent architectural landmarks on Svoboda Street. The Annunciation Cathedral, in particular, stands out, positioned on the red line of the street and distinguished by its monumental proportions.
