In the historical center of Moscow, there are many ancient churches, but not everyone knows their history, which goes back centuries. Right by the Kitai-Gorod metro station stands the beautiful Cathedral of All Saints on Kulisheki, built between 1687 and 1889, but its history began much earlier. It is hard to imagine, but the first wooden church on this site appeared as early as 1380 and served as a cemetery church. It was built in memory of the heroes of the Battle of Kulikovo, who were buried here.

The name of the church raises many questions. There are several versions of its origin, but the most common explanation is that the church was considered one of the furthest from the Kremlin. Other versions, such as 'at the devil's on Kulisheki,' appeared later and are associated with the Ivanovsky Monastery, rather than the Church of All Saints.

The first stone church of All Saints on Kulisheki was built in 1488; before that, only wooden churches stood on this site. Over time, the stone church fell into disrepair, and it was decided to erect a more spacious church in the style of Moscow Baroque, which was popular at the time. However, there is a possibility that a significant part of the church was built during the time of Boris Godunov, with the rest completed in the officially stated years. It is known that an older part of the necropolis has been preserved beneath the church.

After the arrival of Soviet power, the church was closed and used for interrogations, where people were tortured and killed. In the 1990s, when the church basement was opened, bodies of the tortured were found, and a cross was erected in their memory. Since then, people have come here to pray for the victims of repression and modern prisoners. The church was preserved thanks to its connection with the Battle of Kulikovo, and in 1975 it was transferred to a museum, after which it was restored. In 1991, the church was returned to the faithful, and since then, services have been held there.
