Among the outstanding works of Rostov architect Grigory Nikolaevich Vasilyev, who worked in pre-revolutionary Rostov-on-Don, stands the elegant building of a small cemetery church, erected between 1910 and 1913. The main altar of the church was consecrated in honor of the Ascension of the Lord, and since then it has been called the Ascension Church.

The church was built with funds from merchants Gerasimov, Myasnikov, and Safonov, well-known Rostov philanthropists. In addition to the main altar, the side chapels were consecrated in honor of Ariadne and Natalia, as well as John the Theologian. Today, the church is active again and holds the status of a cultural heritage site of regional significance.

The history of the Brotherhood Cemetery began with the epidemic of 1892, after which a cemetery named Brotherhood appeared outside the city limits. It became the largest in Rostov-on-Don. Initially, there was not even a chapel at the cemetery, but later materials from a temporary church on New Bazaar Square were used for the construction of the church.

The architecture of the new church combined elements of Neo-Byzantine and Neo-Russian styles. Initially, it had one large dome and four small ones, the facades were adorned with brick cladding, and a tent-shaped bell tower rose above the western entrance. The main volume of the church was topped with a dome with a cupola, measuring 38×20 meters.

With the arrival of Soviet power, the church was looted, closed in 1929, and repurposed as a warehouse for the Dynamo Stadium. In 1933, the community managed to resume services, but in 1937 the church was closed again, and later the bell tower and dome were destroyed.

When the city was occupied by German troops and Cossack formations were created, the church was reopened at the initiative of local residents, and it functioned until the return of the Soviet army. Only in 1946 was it officially permitted to hold services, and since then the church has remained active. In the late 1990s, restoration took place, during which the destroyed bell tower and dome were restored. In the second half of the 2000s, the interior decoration of the church was updated.
